Vignette 1: Entrance into the Forest: October Light and Mist
Sequoia Rhapsody: Movement 1: The opening reflects the awesome mood and serenity one feels upon entering the forest, the astonishing play of light and mist creating the atmosphere of wonder.
Vignette 2: The Ancient Giants |
Sequoia Rhapsody: Movement 3: The theme, an ascending half-step followed by a leap up, symbolizes the towering reach skyward of the trees and gaze. The theme is hinted at in the first movement, is sung by the birds in the second movement, and appears in full force in this movement. De Wayne’s theme (the late De Wayne Fulton) is introduced by the flutes and echoed by the horns near the end of this movement.

Vignette 3: Song of the Sequoias & Forest Trial
Sequoia Rhapsody: Movement 5: The nine-note theme played by the solo cello is the “bowing music” I heard from high in the forest canopy as the wind nudged the high branches.
Vignette 4: Twilight: Harper in the Woods
Sequoia Rhapsody: Movement 6: The mood changes as the light turns to hues of gold and blue. The forest become, if possible, more serene and our spirits introspective.
Vignette 5: Requiem for a Giant
Sequoia Rhapsody: Movement 9: In Movement 8 (cannot be made into a Vignette) was THE STORM: thunder, rain, flood and fall of the Giant Tree. This was written shortly after De Wayne Fulton’s passing.
Vignette 6: Finale: (Fugue) Life Springs Anew
Sequoia Rhapsody: Movement 10 is the Finale: This is a double fugue derived from both the theme of the Ancient Giants and Song of the Sequoia. The main themes are repeated and counterpointed numerously to represent the thousands of young saplings that spring from both the body of the fallen Sequoia and from the surrounding, light-filled forest floor.
