Enter the primeval grove of ancient redwoods; feel their majesty and serenity. Sequoia Rhapsody is what musicians call a "tone poem" or "programmatic" music: that which evokes a place, personality, or idea, such as Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" or Richard Strauss' Don Quixote and Alpine Symphony. The inspiration for this work is the ancient Redwood forests, the old-growth [virgin] forests along California's northern coast, and central Sierra mountains. The ancestors of these majestic groves of 2200 - 3500 year-old giants were alive when the first dinosaurs roamed 200 million years ago. They covered much of the subtropical regions of earth until recent geological ages. Now the two species of Sequoias found in the relatively small groves in California are the only Sequoias left on the planet. An experience in one of these primeval rainforests is to feel the same enchantment that influenced the veneration of trees and great forests. It is humbling to walk through these living Sequoia pillars and know many of the majestic trees have reached skyward for 175 human generations. |
