Endless Sea is a tribute to a people who live with the ancient tradition of stewardship and reverence for their land. The natural beauty of the Japanese islands and their refined culture is reflected in their musical heritage. The shakuhachi (Japanese bamboo flute) is an unusually dynamic instrument, often used as a meditative tool with a rich history within the Zen Buddhist tradition. This album is a fusion of East and West, of ancient and modern musical instruments and traditions. It was a rare pleasure to make music with shakuhachi artist John Singer, one of the few Americans to earn the status of Master in Japan. —P.H. |
